I am inspired by both the pristine and the weathered, from iridescent shells to eroded concrete. Stormy horizons and shifting skies inform my work, reflecting my deep connection to nature’s elements. Through painting, I capture fleeting shifts in color, light, and shadow, inviting viewers to slow down and absorb these transient moments. I work in integrated mixed media within layers of encaustic—an ancient medium of molten beeswax and resin fused with pigment. I incorporate acrylic and oil paint, powder pigment, oil pastel, ink, fabric, crystalline powders, scraped ash and other mixed media, building layered surfaces rich in texture and depth. Using a torch, hot irons, and sculptural tools, I fuse and shape each layer. The translucency of the wax and resin allows light to move through the surface, subtly shifting color and creating a sense of luminosity. Inspired by open spaces, water, and skylines, I guide viewers to the edge of vast, quiet environments—spaces that feel both grounding and expansive. While celebrating these ecosystems, I also reflect their fragility, inviting a deeper awareness of our connection to the natural world.
Artist Bio
Deborah Martell is a German-Israeli-American contemporary artist based in Boise, Idaho. Born in Germany to a German mother and Israeli father who met in the aftermath of conflict, she was raised with a deep awareness of cultural complexity, travel, and connection. Extensive early travel—cross-country journeys throughout the United States and exploration of Europe and the Mediterranean—instilled in her a lasting sensitivity to landscape, light, and place.
Martell earned her degree in Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego, and built her early career in California, working in San Diego and San Francisco as an Art Director in the digital, visual, and graphic design fields. About 20 years ago, she discovered encaustic mixed media painting and embraced it as her primary medium, drawn to its layered texture, depth, and luminous, opalescent surfaces.
Her large-scale landscapes explore light, atmosphere, color, and form, often reflecting themes of environmental fragility and the shifting threshold between stability and uncertainty. Martell has exhibited and sold extensively across the United States and Mexico—from Miami to San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta—with dedicated collectors throughout the U.S. and Mexico. She has held leadership roles with TEDx Boise, AIGA San Diego, and Surel’s Place Garden City, Idaho.
