Janet Massimino

I am an abstract artist fascinated by the process of turning thoughts and feelings into physical paintings. The act of creating—from an initial idea to a finished piece—is both challenging and joyful, drawing me back to my studio repeatedly. I explore color, shape, line, and texture to capture the emotions tied to memories of places and experiences. Living in the Northwest, nature is my constant inspiration. Walking trails or fishing in rivers connects me to seasonal changes, shifting light and shadow, and the rugged textures of the landscape. These moments inform my work, which often reflects nature’s cycles and the sense of transformation in both the physical world and beyond. I work mainly with oils mixed with wax to build rich textures but also use acrylics for their immediacy. I often incorporate found natural materials like dirt, sticks, and stones, pressing them into paper or wood to create marks that feel alive and unpredictable. I sometimes work on several surfaces at once, letting ideas grow and unfold across pieces. I don’t start with a fixed subject; instead, I let the process guide me. I’m drawn to contrasts—light and dark, smooth and rough—and trust that the painting will reveal its meaning over time. My palette is limited but flexible, mixing a few colors to create depth. I use unconventional tools to make spontaneous lines and textures. Poetry and scientific writing sometimes spark ideas, showing me how a single word or phrase can open a door. As I grow, my work becomes more straightforward, but my drive to express what words can’t reach only grows stronger. Through my art, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own creativity and celebrate the wildness in their lives.
