Karen Eastman

painting (oil)

I am intrigued by the how the human spirit and the human form seems to be embodied in the shapes found in nature.  Some of my favorite examples of this are found in the beauty of a tree. Each tree reveals the human experience in its own way, by the shape of its trunk that has been gnarled over time, or the curve of its branches from the elements of Mother Nature.  I see a feminine energy that emanates from within each tree, and I seek to draw that out and portray it in each composition. Breaking this concept down further, I am interested in finding simplicity in something complex. I like to take smaller parts of the organic whole, like leaves, branches, rocks, or grass and paint segments, or close up views of these natural forms. I believe the viewing experience then becomes more intimate and interpretive. I try to capture the spirit in each of these elements by using movement through strong sensual lines, and by using an extensive color palette.  Painting becomes very cathartic for me as I work through life’s trials and triumphs with each composition.  I create my compositions from the inside out, depicting what I experience, as opposed to what I literally see in front of me.
