I create landscape paintings and drawings that are stylized, non-traditional, colorful, and sometimes whimsical. I work with two mediums, oil stick paints and colored pencils. My paintings and drawings are my interpretations of the feeling and sense that a particular environment gives me, rather than the representational look of the land. I create work that is rich in color and ordered in composition, and I use both mediums in a manner that allows me to build texture and create complex colors that I believe mimic the many surfaces and varied interplaying hues in nature.
I choose to work with landscapes because I am forever amazed by the infinite number of shapes and textures that compose our natural environment. I follow how quickly the color of the sky above me changes, I imagine the texture of the earth hidden just below my feet, and I wonder at all the wet, squishy, dirty, rocky, blooming, curvy, brilliant stuff on the earth’s surface. When I paint and draw I am always striving to bring my fascination with the landscape to a two dimensional surface. Our world is filled with awe-inspiring monumental landscapes that are often quite wonderfully depicted in paintings and photographs. But nature is also full of much less visually powerful, but equally fascinating “ordinary” landscape events. My hope is to help those who see my work to look differently at the everyday landscape and the small pieces of the natural environment that they might ordinarily glance past.
